Solenoid Valve Use in the Water Industry

There are a wide range of solenoid valves used in the water industry including Plastic, Brass and Stainless Steel bodied water solenoid valves which are used according to the application and environmental requirements. Water solenoid valves are available in 2/2 way normally closed or 2/2 way normally open with operation either as direct acting / zero rated or pressure / servo pilot assisted. Typical port sizes used for water applications include 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1", 11/4", 11/2", 2", 21/2" and 3" BSP with NPT thread or either flange PN16 or ANSI150Lb. when working with water the best seal option is typically NBR however EPDM is a preferred seal for drinking water and potable water applications as this offers a reduced taste. Many water solenoid valve manufacturers also offer FKM sealing but we do not recommend FKM for water applications.

Most water solenoid valve applications will run from 12vdc, 24vDC or 24vAC and 240vAC but other voltages will include 48vdc, 110vdc and 220vdc or 12vac, 48vac, 110vac, 220vac, 230vac and 380vac 50/60Hz with safe area IP65 DIN43650 electrical connection and for some ATEX hazardous area applications engineers can choose an EEx m II T4 or explosion proof ATEX EExdIICT6 flame proof coil.

	Brass Water Solenoid Valves zero rated direct acting. Zero rated general purpose brass water solenoid valves are suitable for a wide range of water applications including UV water filtration, Water Softeners, General Water Filtration Systems, gravity fed, closed loop, water suction, low pressure and general mains water ON/OFF control and users can choose between miniature, general purpose, normally closed or normally open solenoid valves to suit the water application. Sizes range from 1/8 BSP to 2" BSP or Flange with VDE, UL, CSA, IP65 or IP67, Manual Over Ride, High Pressure, ATEX, latching (bi Stable) operation options available.
	Brass Solenoid Valves pilot servo pressure assisted. Pilot servo assisted general purpose brass solenoid valves are suitable for a wide range of water applications including water tank refilling systems, open outlet systems and high pressure water systems and general mains water ON/OFF control and users can choose between miniature, general purpose, normally closed or normally open solenoid valves to suit the water application. Sizes range from 3/8 BSP to 3" BSP or Flange with VDE, UL, CSA, IP65 or IP67, Manual Over Ride, High Pressure, ATEX, latching (bi Stable) operation options available.
	Stainless Solenoid Valves zero rated direct acting. The stainless steel zero rated general purpose water solenoid valves are suitable for a more specialised range of water applications including RO Reverse Osmosis systems, Pure Water Plant, Demineralised Water (De mineralised Water), low pressure and gravity fed systems, closed loop and water suction and chemically treated water applications. Ideally suited for corrosive environments and food industry use where corrosive cleaning chemicals are used within the food processing systems. Sizes range from 1/8 to 2" BSP or flanged DN15 to DN150 Flange with VDE, UL, CSA, IP65 or IP67, Manual Over Ride, High Pressure, ATEX, normally open, normally closed or latching (bi Stable) operation options available.
	Stainless Solenoid Valves servo / pressure assisted. The stainless steel pressure assisted general purpose solenoid valves are suitable for a more specialised range of water applications including RO Reverse Osmosis systems, Pure Water Plant, Demin Water (De mineralised Water), high to medium pressure and open to atmosphere and water tank refilling systems and chemically treated water applications. Ideally suited for corrosive environments and food industry use where corrosive cleaning chemicals are used within the food processing systems. Sizes range from 3/8 to 2" BSP or flanged DN15 to DN350 Flange with VDE, UL, CSA, IP65 or IP67, Manual Over Ride, High Pressure, ATEX, normally open, normally closed or latching (bi Stable) operation options available.
	Plastic Solenoid Valves. Plastic solenoid valves are available in a wide range of materials, however typically plastic water solenoid valves are nylon bodied suitable for water up to 10 Bar pressure. Many plastic solenoid valves come with the WRAS Water Board approvals for Potable (drinking) water applications. Port  sizes range from 1/8 BSP to 2" BSP, with water appliance valves for dishwashers and washing machines available with 3/4 BSP male thread to 10mm or 12mm single, double or triple outlet hose barb connections or 15mm Push In Speed Fit ends for direct fitment to 15mm copper pipe.  Other materials of construction include PVC, POM, PP, PVC and PTFE for more aggressive applications however for general water applications such as mains water, tap water, drinking water, potable water and domestic water applications white nylon valves bodies are fine, for RO water, demin water and pure water we recommend our POM or Delrin black body water control valves.  Port sizes available typically range from 1/8 BSP through to 2" BSP or metric cement socket with options for normally open, normally closed or latching (bi Stable) operation.

For water spray systems where back pressures are generated from the water nozzle we would recommend electrically or motorised actuated 304 stainless steel and CPVC plastic ball valves with fail-safe close (auto return) that are electrically actuated and also suitable for many other contaminated media applications such as waste water, rainwater, dirty water, solar panels, humidifiers, water shower control and many other water applications with voltage range 9 to 24v AC/DC or 85-265vAC, Port sizes 1/2, 3/4, 1,11/4,11/2 and 2" threaded connection.
